Medical Officer on tank landing vessel

LST Humphrey Gale, Port Said July 1955

After about six months at the British Military Hospital, Fayid I was posted as the medical officer on LST Humphrey Gale, a tank landing vessel, sailing from Port Said down the Suez Canal and along the Red Sea then turning up the Gulf of Aqaba in order to off load Army equipment for the Jordanian Army. At the top of the gulf there was a simple stone jetty surrounded by palm trees. A truly delightful Arabian scene, but now I believe developed in Western style even with a Hilton Hotel! A tragedy to destroy such a beautiful and tranquil spot.

The reason for there being a medical officer on this trip was because previously a soldier had died from heat stroke on this voyage. The absurdity of having a doctor on board in case of further problems was that there was no resuscitation equipment on board so nothing could have been done to save anyone at risk of heatstroke.
