Tragic recreation

Football

A detachment of the Highland Light Infantry in their off duty often played football on a pitch near one of the Cypriot villages. After playing, they refreshed themselves by drinking from a nearby well. This they were doing on one particularly hot afternoon after a game of football. As many of them were leaning over the well, a massive explosion occurred from inside the well. This was of course from a bomb planted in the well by EOKA. I forget how many were killed or dreadfully wounded but it was one of the grimmest of the EOKA episodes.

Billiards

As already mentioned, many of the British Military bases employed civilian workers and this inevitably created a degree of risk because of infiltration by EOKA freedom fighters. This did unfortunately happen in one RAF base. EOKA had managed to plant a bomb under the billiard's table in the NCOs' mess. It was timed to explode when a game was nearly always being played and on this day their timing was tragically very accurate. The explosion resulted in one of the NCOs losing both his legs.
